Yemen unrest raises concerns about military aid
WASHINGTON (AP) — An initial Pentagon proposal to provide more than $43 million in military aid does not include any assistance for Yemen, underscoring concerns about the unrest there that threatens to topple the country's U.S.-backed leader.
A Pentagon spokesman says the terror threat coming from Yemen remains a concern and the U.S. will continue to monitor the upheaval there. President Ali Abdullah Saleh's forces have cracked down on protesters demanding he step down after 32 years in power.
Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell says he does not believe the U.S. commitment to Yemen has lessened.
The funding proposal, which has been delivered to Congress, would pay for training and war-fighting equipment to 10 countries that are allies in the Afghanistan war.
