[워싱톤=신화통신/KNS뉴스통신] 톰 하이델버거는 2001년 9월 11일 아침 6시 35분경 그 때를 기억하는데, 아내 미셸로부터 아들 토마스를 위해 점심 도시락을 챙겨서 학교에 데려다 주라고 확인하는 전화를 받았다.
“미셀은 그런 사람이었어요, 충실한 엄마, 멋진 아내였죠” 라고 하이델버거가 말했다.
엄마와 아내 역할에다, 미셸은 아메리칸항공 여승무원이었다. 그날 아침 워싱턴 덜레스 공항에서 로스앤젤레스 국제공항까지 가는 플라이트 넘버(항공편 번호) 77의 수석 객실승무원이었다.
US항공의 조종사인 하이델버거와 미셸은 모두 일을 나가므로, 교대로 한 사람은 집에 남아 아이들을 돌보기로 했는데, 그날은 하이델버거의 비번 날이었다.
미셸이 전화를 하고 3시간 후에 하이델버거는 매릴랜드 주 췌비에 있는 집에서 TV앞에 앉아 뉴스를 보았는데, 이때 다른 모든 사람들처럼 두 대의 여객기가 뉴욕의 월드트레이드센터를 공격하고 세 번째 비행기가 북 버지니아주 알링턴카운티의 미 국방성 건물을 강타하는 장면을 보았다.
하이델버거는 비행물체가 소형비행기로 보였고, 처음 보도들은 보스턴에서 로스앤젤레스로 가는 것이라고 했기에 그의 첫 반응은 “아, 미셸은 안전하구나!”였다. 그러나 아메리칸항공에 있는 친구에게 전화를 했을 때 최악의 결과가 드러났다.
미셸이 탄 비행기는 5인의 테러리스트들에 의해 공중 납치되고, 거기 탑승한 64명 전원과 미 국방성을 공격 시 그 건물 안에 있던 125명을 사망하게 했던 바로 그 비행기였던 것이다.
"두 아이의 엄마인 내 아내가 변을 당하면서 밤사이 졸지에 나는 그 애들에게 ‘외부모’가 되었다. 아래 글귀들이 꼭 내 경우를 그대로 말해주는 듯하다. "라고 하이델버거씨는 말한다.
“당신은 동반자를 잃었군요! 당신은 연인을 잃었어요! 동시에 당신의 최고의 친구를 잃었습니다. 이제 앞으로 영영 당신의 인생이 변하였군요”

WASHINGTON, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Tom Heidenberger still remembers, on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, at about 6:35, he received a phone call from his wife Michele, reminding him to pack up lunch for their son Thomas and take him to school.
"That's the type of person Michele was, dutiful mother, a wonderful wife," said Heidenberger.
Apart from being a mother and a wife, Michele was a flight attendant at American Airlines. On that morning, she was the senior cabin attendant on flight 77, from Dulles, Washington DC to Los Angles International Airport. Michele and Heidenberger, a pilot at U.S. Airways, worked out a schedule so that one of them could stay home and take care of their kids, and that day was Heidenberger's "day off."
Three hours after Michele's phone call, Heidenberger sat in front of a TV at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland, notified by news channels like everybody else that after two passenger planes hit the World Trade Center in New York, a third plane had struck the Pentagon, in Arlington County, northern Virginia.
Heidenberger said the plane seemed like a small one, and initial reports said it was from Boston to Los Angeles, his first reaction is "Oh, Michele safe."
But a call to a friend at American Airlines confirmed the worst. Michele's plane was the one hijacked by five terrorists and crashed into the Pentagon, killing all 64 aboard, as well as 125 inside the building.
"Overnight, I became a single parent because of the death of my wife, the mother of my two children.
That's pretty much it," said Heidenberger. "You lose your partner, you lose your lover, you lose your best friend, it would change you forever."
