[카트만두=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 네팔정부가 세계 최고봉인 에베레스트산의 높이를 새로 측정할 준비를 하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
네팔은 공식적으로 10년 전에 측정했던 에베레스트산 높이를 8,448미터를 인정하고 있으나 최근 중국과 서유럽 등반가들 사이에 다른 주장이 제기되고 있다.
네팔의 토지개혁관리부 고팔 기리 대변인은 20일 지난주 정부가 에베레스산 높이를 다시 측정하기로 했다고 발표했다.
그는 "이번 주 새로운 측정계획이 확정되고 위성측정기술을 이용해 정상의 높이를 측정할 것"이라고 말했다.

Nepal decides to measure up Mount Everest
KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Nepal's government has ordered a new measurement of Mount Everest to determine exactly how high the world's highest mountain is.
Nepal has continued to recognize the decades-old measurement of 29,028 feet (8,448 meters). However, there have been other claims recently by China and western climbers.
Land Reforms Ministry spokesman Gopal Giri said Wednesday that the government decided last week during its annual budget speech to take the new measurement.
He says the plans are being put in place this week and the work will entail placing a device on the peak that will measure the height using satellite technology.
