[파리=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 아프간과 이라크 전에 참가하여 폭탄테러로 입은 가벼운 외상으로 뇌에 손상을 당한 수십만 명의 미군병사들 가운데 중년이 지나면서 알츠하이머병이나 치매 증세를 보이는 사람이 늘고 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다.

아프간과 이라크 전에 참전한 다수의 미군 병사들의 가벼운 뇌 손상에 따른 장기적 영향에 대해서 아직 잘 알려지지 않고 있다.

프랑스에서 열린 알츠하이머 국제회의에서 18일 중증 뇌 손상만이 치매 증세로 이어진다는 현재의 가설을 뒤집는 연구결과가 나온 것이다.

Brain injury raises dementia risk, US study finds

PARIS (AP) — A large study in older veterans raises fresh concern about mild brain injuries that hundreds of thousands of American troops have suffered 　from explosions in recent wars. Even concussions seem to raise the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease or other dementia later in life, researchers found.

Closed-head, traumatic brain injuries are a legacy of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Body armor is helping troops survive bomb blasts, but the long-term effects of their head injuries are unknown.

The study, reported Monday at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in France, challenges the current view that only moderate or severe brain injuries predispose people to dementia.
